A new competition, launched by British Society of Animal Science (BSAS), targeted primarily at final year undergraduate students, has been won by Kathryn Cooke from Institute of Rural Sciences, University of Wales, Aberystwyth
Students from universities and colleges around the UK were invited to participate by selecting one of the five subject areas and producing a comprehensive review of the subject in no more than 800 words.
A panel of judges representing research, universities and advisory and industry interests then assessed the reviews.
Prof Greenhalgh of BSAS who led the panel of judges said, "it was a very close competition that Kathryn narrowly won with her review on the topic of: "Alternatives to the use of antibiotics in the production of food from animals". Prof Greenhalgh commended Kathryn's review which the judges considered was comprehensive, addressed the key issues and was easy to follow."
Dr Alan Duncan chairman of the Society's Technical Committee commented, " this is the first time BSAS have run the competition and we are very pleased with the number and quality of the entries that we have received. It is our intention to run the Student Competition next year and providing support continues make it an annual event.
Kathryn will receive a cheque to the value of £150 and runners up Hedwig Emmerig and Victoria Last also from Aberystwyth will each receive £50 cheques.
