Dr Iain Wright is this years winner of the prestigious British Society of Animal Science (BSAS), Sir John Hammond Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to animal science.
The citation for the award recognised the contribution that Dr Wright has made to research in Animal Science, particularly on the nutrition and reproductive biology of beef suckler cows and to the development of grazing systems for beef cattle.
In accepting the award Dr Wright stressed the need to encourage and facilitate scientists of different disciplines to work together. The lack of structures and mechanisms was hampering the development of the full potential of the combined scientific expertise that is available in the UK.
Many of the issues that Society expects from agriculture, specifically quality safe food at a reasonable price that is produced in a way that is environmentally sustainable and socially equitable require a multidisciplinary approach. He urged funders of research to recognise this need and pave the way for such studies to take place.
Dr Wright, is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and University of Edinburgh. He then joined the Hill Farming Research Organisation - now The Macaulay Institute where he is currently Programme Manager, Agro-ecosystems.
Dr Wright urged young scientists to participate in the active debate of animal science issues who as Animal Science's future should be cherished. He also paid tribute to the many colleagues who had encouraged and stimulated his research.
