Summer 2008 Vacation Scholarship Awards

Genesis Faraday/BSAS Vacation Scholarship Awards to research organizations
The Genesis Faraday Partnership and BSAS are pleased to announce a call for 2007 BSAS/Genesis Faraday Vacation Scholarship Awards as a means to encourage undergraduates into research in the field of farm animal genetics and genomics. A competition for four Summer 2007 Vacation Scholarship Awards is now open.

Purpose
The Vacation Scholarship is intended to provide promising undergraduates with 'hands-on' experience of research during the summer vacation and to encourage them to consider a career in research.

What does the student get?
Scholarships are available for a minimum of six and a maximum of eight weeks' work and carry a stipend of £200 per week. The scheme aims to provide practical work experience in an environment that will match the student’s area of study or interests. Long term it will help career prospects for young people.

Who can apply?
Research Institutes and Universities that are paid up members of Genesis Faraday Partnership[1] can apply to host a Vacation Scholarship. The project must be in the field of Genetics and Genomics as applied to Livestock Breeding and/or Animal Health on one of the farmed terrestrial species or farmed fish. The host institution will receive a grant of £2,500 (including any applicable VAT) from BSAS (to cover student salary (approx £1600) and project costs (approx £900). Organisations allocated an award will be responsible for recruiting the student including any costs of advertising. It is not necessary to have identified a student at the time of application, but if a student has indicated an interest, then details of the student may be provided at the time of application.

The Allocation Process
In a process scrutinized by the Genesis Faraday Research and Development Committee (RDC), a group comprising the Genesis Faraday Director, Technology Translators, the Chief Executive of BSAS and the Chairman of the RDC will decide allocation of the Vacation Scholarship Awards. Proposals will be assessed according to the following criteria:

Relevance to the Genesis Faraday remit; Genetics and Genomics as applied to Livestock Breeding and Animal Health.
•       Research Partner’s track record
•       The likely value of the training opportunity for the student
•       Quality of the project proposed

Application Procedure  Supervisors from Institutions should complete the employer application form which can be downloaded here.

Applications will be considered until all four awards have been allocated, initially only one vacation scholarship will be allocated per research organisation unless the scholarships are undersubscribed.

Time Scale
Applications should be received by 11 April 2008 and applicants will be notified of the outcome of applications by 25 April 2008.

The fully filled out Genesis Faraday Application Form should be e-mailed to carol.didcock@genesis-faraday.org. Only Application Forms received by Midnight March 16th 2007 will be considered.
